The Signs That It's Time to Get a New Job

Getting up for work isn't always easy. But if you're finding that it's more difficult than usual, could it be time to get a new job?

Leaving a job can be a really big decision, but sometimes it's just what we need.

So how can you tell if you're just having a bad day, or if you really need to make a change?

Experts say there are both "push" and "pull" factors that make us want to change jobs.

"Push" factors are the things pushing us out of a job. These could be a toxic workplace, or maybe a bad boss.

"Pull" factors are the things that are encouraging us to move somewhere new — for example, better pay, or more opportunities.

So how much "push" is too much?

John Coleman from Harvard Business Review says if you "regularly feel dread" about going to work, it may be time to leave. "Your life is short," he adds, and work shouldn't be something to dread.

The Monarch Institute in Australia says if you don't like the person you've become at work, it may be a sign that it's time to go. Friends, family or colleagues may notice this before you do: perhaps you're more impatient than you used to be, and work is the reason. You might be feeling underappreciated, or feel that the work you're asked to do is too stressful or demanding.

Some big "pull" factors might include a job that can give you better work-life balance, or maybe you see an opportunity to do something you're really passionate about, or something that will make you more money.

However, not everyone will be able to change jobs when they want to — there are lots of reasons why some people may have to stay where they are.
