74% of Global Companies Struggling to Find Staff

Companies around the world are having trouble finding staff, and a recent survey has found out just how much.

The Tokyo branch of ManpowerGroup, a global staffing company, surveyed more than 40,000 companies in 42 places around the world. The survey was done in October 2024, with the results released in January.

The survey found that, globally, 74% of companies are having trouble getting the employees they need — down from a high of 77% in 2023. The lowest rate was just 30% in 2009.

Germany is having the most trouble, with 86% of companies there saying that finding staff is an issue, up four percentage points from last year. Next are Israel at 85% and Portugal at 84%.

Puerto Rico is having the least trouble, where just 53% of companies say it's an issue.

According to the survey, the largest companies are having the least trouble finding employees. Staff in health care and life sciences are the hardest to find.

In Japan, 77% of companies say they're having trouble getting staff — down eight percentage points from last year.

In the survey, Japanese companies said they were doing a number of different things to get the employees they need. Thirty percent said they were offering people more money, and 30% also said they were teaching new skills to staff they already had.

Twenty-three percent said they were offering more flexible working hours, and 14% were letting people do remote or hybrid work.

Nine percent said they were using things like AI to reduce the number of staff they need.
